ARCO was a pleasant surprised: a nice fair, great art, good galleries. I understood why Art price rates ARCO as one of the top five Art Fair even though the number of galleries has dropped from 297 to 240 compare to last year.
I have discovered a very interesting artist Willie Cole @ Alexander and Bonin New York.
He re-uses common objects, shoes, hairdryer ...and recreates masks and other objects from primitive art. The influence of Duchamp, the fascination of Picasso and Magritte for African mask is there and much more...I found the African mask made of shoes strikingly emotional and powerful. Scaring and amusing at the same time. Willie Cole is African American, even though he works beyond the race issue and transcend it. With the current trend in favour of African American artists is definitely worth collecting.
